Malachite green and magnesium chloride act as selective agents, combined with high osmotic pressure and low pH to effectively inhibit non-target competitive organisms. Soya peptone provides a source of nitrogen and potassium phosphate acts as a buffer. Hektoen Enteric (HEK) Agar is a selective and differential medium used for the isolation of enteric pathogens. Compared to other enteric differentiating media commonly used, HEK Agar increased the isolation rate of Salmonella spp. and Shigella spp. This was accomplished by increasing the carbohydrate and peptone content of the medium in order to counteract the inhibitory effects of bile salts and indicators.
